J Sathya’s Comments

  • Here is a typical example of the situation of homeworkers in the fashion industry. Please take action to ensure everyone who works in your supply chain is paid fairly, including homeworkers who are often overlooked. If you already have policies for this, please ensure all your suppliers act on them, by measures such as information and audits. Sandra

  • Please consider what is fair practice for all in your businesses. Not just those we can see in the UK but those at the production end of your goods. They deserve the same respect and understanding. Lorna

  • Please read this – Sathanam's plight, and that of all homeworkers, has touched me enough to send this to you. I am such you will also be moved but unlike myself, you have the power to bring about change for Sathanam and all those like her. Please exercise it. Thank you. Ann

  • I don't want to live my life on the backs of others. If you want me to buy your products I need you to:

    1. Appoint an independent organisation to monitor your supply chain.

    2. Record conditions and remuneration for all workers in the chain.

    3. Publish the results so I can see them and check that they are consistent with my values.

    Thank you. Richard

  • Please take the time to read this story.

It saddens me that there is such injustice around clothes manufacturers. This story highlights the unfairness of the situation.

You are uniquely positioned to make a difference.

    I hope you will. John

  • I am emailing to express my concern about the working conditions and pay of homeworkers. I chose this picture and story because the woman reminded me of a friend in Bangladesh.

I would like to encourage you to ensure that homeworkers are paid fairly for their work and have necessary protections. Regards Fiona

  • There is a resonance in this photo, any young mother in this country could find herself in a similar situation, but her rights would be upheld by the state. This woman works for poor pay, fearing the future with little hope. We must take responsibility and push improvements. Margaret

  • Please ensure that all your Homeworkers receive a Living Wage and basic Workers Rights, Thank you. Martin

  • As a working Mum myself, this story resonates. How unfair it is to penalise someone who is doing the same amount of work but whilst juggling more responsibility.

There must be a way to solve this issue. Is it something you can look into when checking your own workforce? Jenny

  • Please prioritise working conditions in the WHOLE labor production chain for your products. Regards, Kara

  • Please read Sathya's story and ensure all workers receive a fair wage for the work they do for your company. Fiona

  • Please be sure to perform regular checks on all stages of your supply chain to ensure that your British customers can buy your goods with a clear conscience. Judy

  • I chose to send you this photo because it shows a typical homeworker involved in the fashion industry. In the UK we have the living wage and we expect a fair wage for the work we do. People who work to make the clothes that you sell should be paid a fair wage for the work that they do. Just as you would make sure that employees in your shops get paid fairly, I want you to take action to ensure that workers in every part of your supply chain get paid fairly for the work that they do. Rachel

  • Please can I encourage you to look at whether you pay a fair wage to the amazing people who create your garments. Hannah

  • Many of these women, like J Sathya, the young Indian mother shown in this photograph, have no choice but to work from home as they have children to care for. Clothing brands in the developed world rely on their hard work and have a moral responsibility to ensure their working conditions are safe and that they are paid fairly. Please take action within your company to ensure their rights are upheld. Emma

  • Please use your influence to support homeworkers who are campaigning for formal rights and benefits. Hilary

  • Please help home workers to get a better deal. You could then tell your customers about your policy on this and your own attitude towards and treatment of home workers. Thank you. Ann

  • Homeworkers deserve the same rights and protections as every other worker. I believe this is something which should happen regardless of the laws in their country, because the rights of every person go beyond what the law in any given place may or may not require. Please do whatever is required, as a matter of urgency, to protect J Sathya and others like her. Margaret

  • Clothing companies brands like yourselves rely on the hard work of people like J Sathya - I want you to take action to ensure that these vital workers have essential rights. Susan

  • As a working mother myself, juggling demands of my work and my children and home life, I really feel for the impossible situation imposed on this woman. Please investigate what is really going on in your supply chains and the impacts on those involved - and make improvements. Eleanor

  • I would like big brands to be more transparent about how they respect the human rights of their workers by improving wages and working conditions. I know consumers like a bargain but they also care about people. Big brands should try to outdo each other on how ethical their practises are in order to achieve sales. Elain

  • This photo made me feel sad and angry. This woman is not being paid fairly for what she does. Please make sure that workers supplying your company are paid properly for the work they do. Carol

  • I have chosen this photo of J Sathya as I think it shows the skilled and very hard work of homeworkers which currently is very undervalued and insufficiently rewarded.

Please do everything you can to ensure fair wages and decent working conditions for homeworkers - something we in the West expect for ourselves and take for granted and should be automatically given to all workers.

    Thank you. Sincerely Ann

  • I was asked to choose a story and every one of them is worth knowing. I hope you take the time to hear them all and I hope you act to improve things for these people and people like them. Rebecca

  • Please take a moment to read Sathya's story and consider the impact of fashion. Does your company pay a fair and living wage and have regulated working conditions? Can you make a positive change this Christmas? Haze

  • I chose to share this story with you, because it resonates strongly with me as someone who mainly works from home, but in far better conditions and in a country with a minimum wage.

Please care for all your workers. They matter.

    Thank you. Kristen

  • Please kickstart action to make homeworkers protected. Seeing the story of the actual people involved moved me to take some action- but it is the industry that must lead on this. Alexandra
