“I am a mother who is constantly having to choose between my career or staying at home with my young children, so this image hit hard for me. I’m incredibly lucky that even when I choose to work from home, it is under my own terms and conditions and I feel safe and stable. I can’t imagine what this mum is going through, and how the stress must also be impacting her children.”
“I had more options when I had small children and worked from home 3o plus years ago. I understand why she does this work and feel upset that she does not have decent working conditions and pay. She is contributing hugely to society and her family.”
”Here is a lady who is caring for her parents and her husband and child - she is doing all she can without the rights she deserves - and needs - please demand that those you buy from care for their staff properly and pay them adequately.” -

"I chose this photo because I was shocked to see the conditions in which homeworkers are operating, and the detrimental affect this has on their health. I am appealing for you to recognise the huge number of homeworkers who contribute to the fashion industry. Please ensure that each and every one of them is guaranteed essential rights, such as a minimum wage, maternity leave, sick pay and a pension. The homeworkers should be treated as fairly as every other worker within the fashion industry.”
”This photo stood out to me as particularly hard-hitting. I can't imagine working in dark, unsanitary conditions on the floor. To have to choose between having to work in the dark or to breathe in constant dust is not one that any worker should have to choose to make. I am lucky enough to not have to make that choice but clothing companies have the ability to change things so that no one has to. There should be no deliberation about improving work conditions for the most vulnerable.” -

“Homeworking is an important part of your industry, but the conditions are poor. Imagine for a moment that your company treated you like this. Please help to improve the work environment by ensuring that you only employ well paid Homeworkers. Thank you.”
“I’ve always loved clothing that has additional embroidery or hand added patterns. As I know India very well, I do know that home working enables many women to be able to carry out the traditional roles of child care or care for elderly relatives. I know that women rely on such work to be able to give their families a degree of independence. And I've tried to purchase from companies that are rightly proud of their ethical production values. This is why I want to share this story with you- to help you work for the same ethical production values for homeworkers that those in factories have. Please find out about the pay and conditions of home workers in the factories that you use. Please insist that they receive the same pay and conditions that those in factories receive; that there is some job security even when fashions change; that older workers receive their rights. charging your consumers? Campaigns such as this one are highlighting injustice often to people who are already aware. Make yourselves transparent and highlight the injustice for all to see.” -

“I chose this photo because of the story - it must be incredibly difficult to work with constant back pain and working from home should not be considered any less valuable. I enjoy buying clothes but these stories prick at my conscience. Can action be taken to ensure these workers have the essential rights. Clothes may cost more and profits may be less but we would be making a huge difference to the lives of these women.”
“I feel so strongly that women with stories like these should be properly paid, and have the rights of other workers. They shouldn't be suffering so that we can get cheaper prices for clothes and furnishings. There is no protection for them when they get older, or ill, and some of the most vulnerable are paying the price instead of us. It would be the best thing I could have for Christmas to see these women properly compensated and protected.”
“I chose this photo because I could never work for the amount of money these workers work for, have no maternity pay, no pension or not having any decent working conditions. Yet, we all have children we need to feed and bills that need to be paid. Please do the right thing!” -

“Here is a typical example of the situation of homeworkers in the fashion industry. Please take action to ensure everyone who works in your supply chain is paid fairly, including homeworkers who are often overlooked. If you already have policies for this, please ensure all your suppliers act on them, by measures such as information and audits.”
”This photo made me feel sad and angry. This woman is not being paid fairly for what she does. Please make sure that workers supplying your company are paid properly for the work they do.”
“As a working mother myself, juggling demands of my work and my children and home life, I really feel for the impossible situation imposed on this woman. Please investigate what is really going on in your supply chains and the impacts on those involved - and make improvements.” -

“I am writing because I am very concerned to read that homeworkers have so few rights, particularly to pensions as they get older. I am a pensioner myself, and would like to know that people who work as homeworkers have the opportunity to have an income from the government when they are too old to work. ”
"I would be grateful if you could take some time to review the conditions of homeworkers in your company, making sure you have good policies in place, and that these policies are being implemented. It concerns me that many homeworkers in the fashion industry do not receive minimum wage, sick pay or pensions.”“I chose to send you this photo because it moved me deeply. I hope it will do the same to you. People should not have to work in conditions like this, particularly not at retirement age. I realise you’re not the entirety of the problem, but you can be a big part of the solution. You have power over your own supply chains - use that power for the good of those homeworkers. I hope that this deluge of messages is enough to show you that this is what your customers want, too. We stand with the homeworkers of India. Will you?”
